Knoxville, Tennessee


 

Knoxville is a city located in Knox County, Tennessee, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 173,890. It is the county seat of Knox County{{GR|6}}, and is the third-largest city in the state of Tennessee. Its nickname is the Marble City, from when it was a major center of marble distribution in the early 1900s. It was named in honor of the first Secretary of War, Henry Knox.

Economy

Knoxville's economy is largely fuelled by the regional location of the main campus of the University of Tennessee, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the National Transportation Research Center and the Tennessee Valley Authority, making Knoxville the heart of the high-tech Tennessee Valley Corridor extending from Blacksburg, Virginia to Huntsville, Alabama.
