King Fahd Causeway
The King Fahd Causeway is the combined bridging and viaduct connection between Khobar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain settled on by a construction agreement signed July 8th 1981. Construction started after the placing of the cornerstone on November 11th 1982 by King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and Sheikh Isa bin Salman Al-Khalifa of Bahrain and went until 1986 when the combination of several bridges and dams was completed. The project, completely financed by Saudi Arabian money, cost a total of USD $1.2 billion. The four lane road (25 m) is 25-26 km long and used 350,000 m³ of concrete along with 147,000 t of reinforcing steel. The causeway is consisted of two parts, a long bridge from Khobar to Umm Alnasan island in Bahrain, and a shorter one from Umm Alnasan island to the main island of Bahrain. The causeway officially opened for public use on November 25th, 1986.
