Most of the stations opened prior to the 1990s were located deep underground, meant to double as a bomb shelter. The newer stations are mostly located much closer to the surface. Like the Moscow Metro network, stations in Kiev are exquisitely decorated and kept very clean. Stations usually have a large vestibule and spacious underground tunnels connecting the station to the surface entrances, where street vendors line the walls with various goods, from fruits and vegetables to flowers to CDs and books to clothing. It is also possible to find fast food restaurants in some passages.
