In 1976 he was working as a colorist on reprint magazines and British children's comics such as Buster and Whizzer and Chips, when he put in a transfer to the new science-fiction anthology magazine 2000 AD. On the first ever issue of this seminal British sci-fi Comic, the centre image of Tharg is by O'Neill. Under the guidance of editor Pat Mills, O'Neill's irreverent hyper-kinetic style became a mainstay of the book, and he became one of the magazine's most popular creators.

O'Neill contributed numerous single page illustrations during the first two year run of 2000AD but it was not until Ro-Busters was added to the comic that he got a regular series. More comfortable with robots and aliens as subjects the strip was a natural showcase for O'Neill.
