Kevin Hart was born in 1954, grew up in London and Brisbane, and was educated at the Australian National University and the University of Melbourne.

Hart is generally regarded as one of Australia's leading poets. His six collections of poetry have won many prizes including the NSW and Victorian Premiers Awards for Poetry.

Hart's poetry collections include The Departure (1978), The Lines of Your Hand (1981), Your Shadow (1984), Peniel (1991), New and Selected Poems (1994), Dark Angel (1996) as well as translations and articles. A new selection of Hart's work Flame Tree: Selected Poems, was publshed by Paper Bark Press in 2002
