Completed in 1974, the arena was the site of the 1976 Republican National Convention. In 1999, the Kemper Arena gained infamy as it was the site of the shocking death (via an accidential fall from a botched stunt) of professional wrestler Owen Hart.

It seats 18,046 for ice hockey and 18,646 for basketball. The building was built in a rather unusual manner designed by Helmut Jahn, with three sets of steel trusses constructed outside of the building to hold up the roof, eliminating the need for interior pillars that would obstruct the field of view. The arena includes 25 luxury suites. It is scheduled for demolition upon the completion of the Sprint Center in 2007.
