~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ She was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, and studied voice at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. At the beginning of her career, she was a voice teacher, but offers would begin pouring in for her eventually. Battle is known for the silvery timbre of her lyric coloratura voice, and has been a particular favorite of conductor James Levine. While not a strong voice, hers captivated listeners in her portrayals of ingenues and heroines such as Pamina in Die Zauberfl?te and Zerlina in Don Giovanni. Both operas are by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Disputes with the Metropolitan Opera in New York, mostly concerning her diva temperament and her treatment of staff (even alienating some artists, including James Levine, into refusing to ever work with her again) led to her highly-publicized firing; despite this, Kathleen Battle remains a favorite on the concert scene. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
