~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The state was founded about 995 by Raja Bijai Pal, who claimed descent from Lord Krishna, and was reckoned 88th in descent. His successors, Hindu Rajputs of the Yadava dynasty, ruled as maharajas. Karauli became a princely state of British India in the early 19th century, and in 1818 was made part of Rajputana Agency. The feudal aristocracy of the state consisted of Jadu connected with the ruling house. They paid a tribute in lieu of constant military service, but in case of emergency or on occasions of state display they were bound to attend on the maharaja with their retainers. Maharaja Bhanwar Pal Deo (born 1862, ruled 1866-1927) was appointed G.C.I.E. in 1897, on the occasion of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.
