The story opens with prot attempting to help a woman in distress, but his assistance is misunderstood and he quickly finds himself under psychiatric observation. He is treated by a Manhattan psychiatrist, Mark Powell (played by Jeff Bridges in the motion picture adaptation) who is tasked with "curing" prot of his supposed delusions. The film poses the question: Is prot crazy or is he light years ahead of us?
