Jyotirmath


 

Jyotirmath, also called Jyotir Math and Joshimath, is a place in Uttaranchal, India in the Himalayas. It is the site of the original uttaramnaya matha or northern math (monastery), established by Adi Sankara.

This is one of the four cardinal "Peetham's" established by Sri Adi Shankaracharya, the others being those at Sringeri, Puri and Dwaraka

As it is close to the pilgrimage town of Badrinath, and the Jyotir Math has not always been active, it is sometimes said that the original northern math was at Badrinath.
