The town was named for the nearby Jobe River through a mapping error. When Spain colonized the area, they named a stream in the area the Rio Jobe after the Jobe Native American tribe. A 1742 map listed it as the "Jove River". When the town was founded by British settlers, they anglicized "Jove" to "Jupiter", thus the town's name. (See 1)
