In the past, other series, such as Beulah, had the main characters as maids, or other subservient roles. In Julia, Carroll played a single mother who was a nurse in a doctor's office. The doctor was played by Lloyd Nolan, and Julia's romantic interests by Paul Winfield and Fred Williamson.
