Duffy joined the cast of the television series Newhart in its second year, as the ditzy maid Stephanie Vanderkellen, which was probably her most popular of all roles. After Newhart's final episode, she appeared in various movies and sitcoms, playing the dumb blonde she is so good at.

After the end of Newhart, Duffy joined Designing Women replacing Delta Burke after she had a quarrel with the producers. Burke's character, Suzanne Sugarbaker, was written off to have moved to Japan while Duffy played the role of Suzanne's cousin, Alison Sugarbaker. However, the role was not popular with the fans. Duffy was written off after one year and replaced by Judith Ivey, portraying BJ Poteet.
