Joseph Saidu Momoh


 
 

Joseph Saidu Momoh (January 26, 1937 - August 2, 2003). Army General, politician and statesman of Sierra Leone. Born in Binkolo, Bombali District, Northern Province, served as president of Sierra Leone from November 28, 1985 to April 29 1992. A case of professional soldier involved in politics, he became a member of the ruling All People's Congress (APC) and succeeded the long-time dictator Siaka Stevens in 1985 as the only candidate in unopposed elections. Momoh was overthrown in the military coup staged by captain Valentine Strasser in 1992.
