José Reyes


 

José Bernabé Reyes (born June 11, 1983 born in Villa Gonzalez, Dominican Republic) is a Major League Baseball shortstop who has played for the New York Mets since 2003. He is a switch-hitter who throws right-handed.

He was brought up from the minor leagues on June 10, 2003. He hit .307 with five homeruns and 32 RBI's in 274 at bats. In his rookie season, Reyes had a 17-game hit streak, longest by a National League rookie. He finished the season with a 35-game errorless streak, longest in the majors that season.

Reyes is a slick-fielding, speedy infield talent. Prior to the 2004 season he was moved to second base upon the signing of Japanese star Kazuo Matsui to a major league contract. By the end of 2004, he was switched back to shortstop after Matsui failed to perform as well as expected at the position.

Reyes has been plagued with injuries since making the major league. In 2003, he injured his ankle which ended his season. In 2004, he severely tore a hamstring in Spring Training and during the season, fractured his fibula, although still managing to steal 19 bases.

Reyes bounced back with a healthy and productive 2005 season, appearing in 161 games, leading the National League with 60 stolen bases and all of Major League Baseball with 17 triples.
