Although he was drafted in 1999, he would not begin his NHL career until the 2002-2003 NHL season. He played 58 games for the Flames and scored 4 goals and 14 points. For a rookie defenseman, that's not bad. In his second season, Leopold would look like a seasoned verteran, playing all 82 games and scoring 33 points.

But the playoffs was where Leopold really shone that season. In 26 games, Leopold notched 10 points. He was a force on the penalty kill, and he helped bring the Calgary Flames to a game 7 Stanley Cup final, one they would ultimately lose.
