Joinville, Brazil


 

Joinville, a city in the south of Brazil, located to the northeast of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, founded in March, 9, 1851, by German immigrants. Nowadays Italian, Swiss and Norwegians descendants are also common. The weather is subtropical, but summers can be very hot and humid.

Even though it is a very "German" kind of town, its name is French - Joinville was named after the French Prince of Joinville, who married in 1843 the Princess to the Brazilian Throne = Princess Francisca of Brazil "Dona Francisca", the sister of Pedro II of Brazil "Dom Pedro II".

The land where Joinville is located was part of the French & Brazilian Royal Family Wedding gift = The Prince of Joinvile and his bride never visited the land, but a Royal Palace was built in their honor around 1870.

Today, the Royal Palace is a National Historic Museum , housing the "Royal" home with all its furniture and costumes showing the lifestyle dating back to the mid 19th century. Beautiful tall palm trees planted 150 years ago line the street accessing the site, right in the center of the city.

Joinville is Santa Catarina's largest city. In 2005 its population was about 500,000 in an area of 1180 square km.; Joinville's economy is based on industrial activities and commerce. The city is the center of many Brazilian high-tech industries and very well known large corporations.

The first inhabitants in the region of Joinville were the Tupi-Guarani people.

Joinville is considered the "City of flowers"

It has one of the highest standards of living in Brazil. Its industrial output is the third largest in the Southern States of Brazil - after the large main cities of Porto Alegre & Curitiba.

Its proximity to the Ocean and the Mountains, in adittion to the its high quality of life, has made Joinville a magnet for Brazilians escaping the violence in big centers. Lately it has developed a very active service industry based on its new Convention Center "Center Cau Hansen", which holds several large events throughout the year.

It is also becoming a "College Town" with one main Private University - UNIVILLE, a local branch of the State University - UDESC and several other Independent Colleges, which cater to the local industry's needs.

Joinville is also the host city of the "Joinville Dance Festival" a large national dance event held every year during the month of July. Joinville is the only city outside of Moscow to have a school of the Bolshoi Ballet, the renowned Russian Ballet Company.
