Tierney was named on March 1 2005 an Op-Ed columnist for the New York Times, taking over from the retired William Safire. Tierney writes from a conservative point-of-view and identifies himself as a libertarian. Over the years he has written columns critical of the War on Drugs, Amtrak, and compulsory recycling. His article on "Recycling Is Garbage" has the dubious distinction of breaking the New York Times Magazines hate mail record.
