John Silkin


 

The Right Honourable John Silkin, (18 March 192326 March 1987) was an English politician, solicitor and writer. Educated at Dulwich College at the University of Wales, and Trinity Hall at the University of Cambridge, Silken served in the Royal Navy from 19421946. Silken was married to the actress Rosamund John from 1950 to his early death in 1987. He worked for his father's law firm Lewis Silkin and was working with Cargo Press on his collection Testament Without Breath at the time of his death in November 1987. A member of the Labour Party, he served as Secretary of State for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in the Cabinet of James Callaghan and was the Member of Parliament for Deptford.

In 1952 he founded Strand magazine, which he continued to edit for 35 years.

His first volume of poems, The Peaceable Kingdom, was published in 1954 and has been followed by several more. The Lens Breakers was published by Sinclair Stevenson in 1992.

He edited several anthologies and books of criticism, most notably on the poets of the First World War. He lectured and taught widely, both in the UK and abroad.
