John Ridge was a part of the Ridge Party, a group that advocated for the removal of the Cherokee Indians to Oklahoma. He was also associated with the signing of the Treaty of New Echota. Allthough this was an illegitimate signature, the treaty was the basis of Andrew Jackson's argument for the removal of the Cherokee Indians. He was assassinated June 22, 1839 after the Trail of Tears because of his signing the Treaty.
