John de Lancie was the principal oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra for many years. Richard Strauss wrote his oboe concerto for de Lancie, whom he met during de Lancie's tour of duty as a soldier in Europe. John de Lancie passed away in 2001, at the age of 80. At the time he was one of the few remaining students of the legendary Marcel Tabuteau of the Curtis Institute of Music. De Lancie also taught at Curtis and served as its director.
