Johnny Pots and Pans (a nickname given him by Vecepia Towery) had managed to forge an effective alliance with Zoe Zanidakis, Tammy Leitner, and Robert DeCanio, dubbed the Rotu-4 because they were the only four members of the original Rotu tribe not to be swapped in the fourth episode. Unfortunately, in the infamous coconut-chopping challenge on Day 24, they had overplayed their hand and unwittingly proceeded to reveal the pecking order outside their tribe by chopping down the bunches assigned these players. This led that group to form the counter-alliance that would vote him out that evening and send the other members of the Rotu-4 to their fate.

During the jury exchange, Carroll had some harsh words for finalists Towery and Neleh Dennis. Eventually he cast one of the four votes Towery would receive. It is very likely he was not so much casting his vote for her but against Dennis. It is even more likely that this decision was due to Dennis' statement that she had not begun playing the game until Day 24, a timeline of great significance to him.

He spent nearly three years in the United States Air Force where he worked as a medic. In 1990, he moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where he then spent almost eight years working with people afflicted with AIDS. During this period, he raised money and donated significant time and energy to numerous AIDS organizations. Because Carroll is openly gay, it may have led Rob Mariano to make homophobic remarks about him.
