John Agustus Stone American dramatist and playwright, born in Concord, Massachusetts in 1801; died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1 June, 1834.

He was drowned in a fit of temporary insanity in the Schuylkill, at Philadelphia, and his monument there bears the inscription: "Erected to the memory of the author of 'Metamora' by his friend, Edwin Forrest". Some sources cite Forrest's success with Stone's plays and his paltry remuneration as causing his suicide.
