Heatherton is the daughter of the late vaudvillian Ray Heatherton. She began her career as a child actress and later appeared on The Perry Como Show as a regular. She made a number of non-notable film appearances, then turned to singing, touring with Bob Hope's USO shows, and she also pitched RC Cola and Serta mattresses in TV commercials. She was considered one of the top sex symbols of the 1960s.

Psychological problems, as well as a well-publicized bout with drug addiction, derailed her career in the 1970s, and in 1971 her then-husband was arrested for indecent exposure in front of a young girl. In 1975, Heatherton starred in a short-lived TV series with her father called Joey and Dad. Her most recent acting role was in the John Waters movie, Cry-Baby in 1990.
