Joan Davis


 

Joan Davis (born Madonna Josephine Davis June 29, 1907 in St. Paul, Minnesota; died May 22, 1961 in Palm Springs, California) was a popular comedienne and actress on radio and TV. Getting her start in vaudeville with her husband, Si Wills, she was one of the few female clowns of her time.

Davis co-starred with Lou Costello in Hold That Ghost (1941), but she was best known for her sitcom I Married Joan, which co-starred Jim Backus as her hapless husband, and her real-life daughter, Beverly Wills, as her TV daughter.

She died of a heart attack at the age of 53. Freakishly, her remaining family (mother, daughter, grandkids) all died in a house fire 2 years later in October 1963.
