Jo Whiley


 
 

Jo Whiley is a British radio disc jockey on BBC Radio 1 born in Northampton, England on the 4 July 1965. She went to university in Brighton. Blonde and often wearing Dr. Martens, she broadcasts from 10am until 12.45pm every weekday. She enjoys live music and has bands and solo artists playing live in the studio frequently. From September 1993 until February 1997 (the heydays of Britpop - Blur and Pulp), she hosted a weekday evening show called The Evening Session with Steve Lamacq from 7 until 9pm Monday to Thursday. The show was was oriented towards less-mainstream, non-dance music. Lamacq still has an evening show each Monday on Radio 1, with a similar content, and has a weekday afternoon show on 6 Music, a digital radio channel.

From February 1997, she had a weekday show from 12 - 2pm, whilst Lamacq did the same evening show slot shunted 1/2 hour earlier, then from 8pm until its final lap in October 2002. Her show includes elements of the evening show, such as tour dates and occasional live 'sessions' at Maida Vale while working within the restrictions of Radio 1's daytime schedule. When Simon Mayo left Radio 1 for Radio Five Live in February 2001, Jo's show was moved two hours earlier to the time it is today.

Current features on her show include Changing Tracks where listeners give personal real life stories on the track that has changed their lives, Staff Wars which involves staff member listeners battling out for the supreme and Marilyn Manson was never in The Wonder Years where listeners send in questions on information they've always wanted to know the answer to such as the aforementioned title which is a popular internet rumour.

Jo is also a television presenter and presents televised coverage of major music festivals, such as the Glastonbury Festival. She also narrated the popular television series, Little Angels.
