Jimmy Quinn (born Croy, East Dunbartonshire (now North Lanarkshire), Scotland, 8 July 1878, died November 1945) is for many the archetypal Celtic F.C. centre forward, revered a century since his heyday by those who know him only as a name ? ?There?ll never be another Jimmy Quinn? is a statement still heard today.

Enduring memory is a fair indication of greatness ? while many are doubtless unfairly forgotten, few if any are unjustly remembered. What makes Quinn?s case more remarkable is that he was swiftly succeeded as Celtic's centre forward by the redoubtable Jimmy McGrory, who from 1922 to 1937 amassed some 550 goals (more than twice Quinn's total, and a British record) at a rate of more than a goal a game, and once scored 8 in one game (v Dunfermline) ? yet even that remarkable history has not eclipsed the memory of Quinn, who is still remembered as unique.

It is not that he was Celtic?s first great goalscorer: that title belongs to Sandy McMahon - perhaps one of the unfairly forgotten? - the Henrik Larsson of his day, who from 1890 to 1903 scored 171 goals in 217 appearances, a strike rate, like Larsson?s a century later, of better than three goals every four games. Nor was Quinn even an immediate success: signed for Celtic by the great Willie Maley from junior club Smithston Albion in 1900, he took several seasons to make his mark, playing at outside- then inside-left before being moved to centre. He was, by all accounts, a most reluctant recruit, refusing to believe that he had the talent to succeed at senior level, despite a superb physique: though not notably tall ? 5? 8½? (174cm) ? he had powerful shoulders and a deep chest. His early outings on the wing suggest that he had a fair turn of speed too. Like so many players of the time and since, he was a coal miner.
