The story goes that Hasselbaink got his current football alias of Jimmy Floyd because his Portuguese teammates couldn't pronounce his real first name. The name seems to have stuck.

Jimmy's first club was Telstar. He played there until 1991, when he moved to AZ Alkmaar. However, he only played there a year before moving to Campomaiorense in August of 1992 and had a good four year spell there. At the age of 24 he was snapped up by Boavista, were he really made his mark. Jimmy scored 20 goals in 29 league appearances for the Portuguese giants, which caught the eye of Leeds United of the English FA Premier league. Once again, after only one year at Boavista, Hasselbaink was bought by Leeds United in June 1997 for £2,000,000, were he carried on his fine goal scoring form. He bagged 16 goals in 30 league appearances and 23 goals in all competitions in his first year in England. His second year at Elland Road was just as good, this time he scored 18 goals in 36 league games, and 21 goals in all competitions. Jimmy then joined the Spanish club Atletico Madrid for £12,000,000 in 1999. Once again a phenomenal season for the Dutchman, he adapted to the Spanish game very quickly, this time scoring 24 goals in just 34 La Liga appearances and 32 goals in all competitions. The message was clear: wherever Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink goes, he scores goals. And that's exactly what he did when he returned to England, this time with Chelsea, for a club record fee of £15,000,000.

During his second spell in the FA Premier League he scored 23 goals in 35 league appearances in the 2000/2001 season, finishing as its top goal scorer. He formed a deadly partnership with Icelandic target man Eišur Smįri Gušjohnsen in his second season at Chelsea, scoring 29 goals in all competitions helping Eišur to a reasonable 23, 52 goals between them! Hasselbaink was 31 now and his last two seasons with the blues wasn't as successful. He scored only 11 goals in 27 games in the 2002/2003 season followed by a tally of just 12 goals in 22 league games. At the age of 33 he joined Middlesbrough on a free transfer. In his first season he got 13 goals in 36 games, he is yet to open his account for the 2005/2006 season.
