When At the Drive-In parted ways (due to creative differences) Jim Ward recruited most of the At the Drive-In members (apart from Omar and Cedric), added bassist Matt Miller, and formed the band Sparta. He uses primarily Gibson guitars and Park amplifiers.

After the release of an EP, Austere, and their first album, Wiretap Scars, Ward was on the way back to the top until the tragic loss of his cousin, Jeremy Ward, who was also "sound manipulator" for Omar and Cedric's band, The Mars Volta

Ward finally overcame this personal loss and used it as fuel for Sparta's second album, Porcelain.
