Frey was hired by the Chicago Cubs for the 1984 season, and again struck paydirt as the Cubs won the division title, their first time getting to the post-season since 1945. During the clubhouse celebration following the division-clinching in Pittsburgh, Frey declared, "The monkey's off our back!" To superstitious Cubs fans, a comment like that courted trouble, and the Cubs were defeated in the heartbreaking National League Championship Series, 3 games to 2, as they won the first two games in Chicago but then lost three straight to the San Diego Padres.
