Jijabai

Jijabai, mother of Shivaji, was the daughter of Lakhuji Jadhav. He was a jagirdar in the court of the Adil Shahi Sultan of Bijapur in present-day Karnataka. Sindkhedraja in the present-day Buldhana district of Maharashtra State is her birth place. She was instrumental in establishment of rule of law in the Jahagir of her husband Shahaji Bhosale. She had eight children, last of whom was Shivaji. Her elder son Sambhaji was killed in a battle with Afzal Khan from the Adil Shahi court.
