Jersey Shore Shark Attacks of 1916

Between July 1 and July 12, 1916, along 80 miles of New Jersey coastline, at least one shark mauled five swimmers resulting in four deaths and survival of one youth who required limb amputation.

• Charles Vansant, 25
• Charles Bruder, 28
• Lester Stillwell, 11
• Stanley Fisher (killed by the shark after diving into the water in an attempt to save Lester Stillwell)
• Joseph Dunn, 12 (survivor)

The responsible shark (or sharks) was believed to be a Sandbar Shark or, most likely, a Great White Shark. However, some have suggested that, due to the fact that the shark was able to attack swimmers in fresh water, the culprit may have been a bull shark.
