One of the most controversial figures in modern American Christianity, Falwell has long associated himself with 'Bible-believing, independent, local-church oriented, Baptist fundamentalism' and leads services at Thomas Road Baptist Church. However, he changed affiliations from the fundamentalist-leaning Baptist Bible Fellowship International to the Southern Baptist Convention, which, although mainly conservative, is not considered a fundamentalist-leaning denomination.
