Jennifer Higdon
Jennifer Higdon (born December 31, 1962) is an American composer of classical music and flutist.

She was born in Brooklyn, spent her first 10 years in Atlanta and studied at Bowling Green State University (for a degree in flute performance) and the University of Pennsylvania. Her Concerto for Orchestra (2002) was commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra and City Scape (2002) by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra

Her composition teachers include Ned Rorem and George Crumb. She met her champion, Robert Spano, in 1985, when Spano was teaching a conducting course at BGSU. Higdon now teaches at the Curtis Institute of Music. She is also serving as the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Composer of the Year in 2005-2006. Her musical style, redolent of the music of Michael Daugherty, uses elements of traditional tonality and octatonic scales.
