~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Nicknamed "Gypsy" he was known for fighting against his opponents with his dancing, fast fists and defensive tactics. He was also known for defeating Tom Allen in 1879. He was listed as a "Pioneer" of boxing International Boxing Hall of Fame. He became the Middleweight champion of England in 1883, as well as the World Champion. He carried many of the traditions of the old London Prize-Ring, but promoted the use of gloves and helped to popularize the sport in the United States and Australia. He held many exhibition matches in New Zealand and Australia. He is also called the "Father of Modern Boxing", being the most prominent fighter promoting the then new Marquees of Queensberry rules. He also conducted tournaments and taught many pugilists. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
