A graduate of New York's Stuyvesant High School and a successful art dealer, he tried unsuccessfully to buy the Baltimore Orioles before succeeding into buying a large share of actions of the Montreal Expos ($75 million). The team was in serious financial difficulties, and the project of a new stadium was stagnant, so he was welcomed as a savior in Montreal. Loria then orchestrated a series of cash calls that diluted the share of the other owners of the Expos, so that he became principal owner.

Then, in an orchestrated move with Bud Selig and John Henry (owner of the Marlins at the time), Henry bid for the Boston Red Sox, sold the Marlins to Loria, who promptly sold the Expos to MLB. The Expos were ultimately transferred to Washington and became the Washington Nationals.
