Jeffrey Guterman


 

Jeffrey Guterman (born April 26, 1958, and raised in Roslyn, New York) is a mental health counselor, educator, and author. In the 1980s, he was influenced by Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and received advanced training and supervision in the model from its founder Albert Ellis. In the 1990s, Guterman developed a solution focused brief therapy model called solution-focused counseling. This model is an integration of solution-focused principles and techniques, postmodern theories, and an eclectic approach.

Jeffrey Guterman was born of Jewish parents on April 26, 1958, in Jamaica, New York. He was the eldest of two children; he has a sister who is two years younger. Guterman's father, like his grandfather, was a real estate developer. He obtained a B.A. in psychology from Boston University in 1980. In 1985, he obtained an M.S. in counseling psychology from Nova Southeastern University. In 1991, he was awarded an M.S. in family therapy from Nova Southeastern University. In 1992, he was awarded a Ph.D. in family therapy from Nova Southeastern University. He was associate editor of the Journal of Mental Health Counseling (1997-2000). He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Counseling Program of the Adrian Dominican School of Education at Barry University. He has presented workshops for professionals and the public for over 20 years. Guterman has earned an international reputation for his solution-focused counseling approach to helping people and organizations change. Jeffrey Guterman currently resides in Miami Beach, Florida.
