Francoeur made his Major League debut when he started in right field against the Chicago Cubs on July 7, 2005. In the bottom of the 8th inning in that game he hit a 3-run home run to center field, his first Major League hit, and got a curtain call from the Braves faithful at Turner Field. He was also given a shaving cream pie to the face from teammate Marcus Giles to celebrate his accomplishments. As of August 2005 he is considered a front-runner, along with San Francisco's Lance Niekro, for the National League Rookie of the Year Award even though he had not played in the majors prior to July 7.
