~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Champollion deciphered the hieroglyphs after Thomas Young had, with the help of groundwork laid by his predecessors: Athanasius Kircher, Silvestre de Sacy, Johan David Akerblad, Thomas Young himself, and William John Bankes.
