Jayendra Saraswathi


 
 

Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal (born July 18, 1935 as Subramanyam Mahadeva Iyer) is the 69th Acharya (guru of the Kanchi matha).

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

He became the Shankaracharya of Kanchi and was given the title Jayendra Saraswathi on March 22, 1954.

He is a religious head of the 'Tamil brahmin' community. Not confining to religion, he meddled with politics and was also involved in talks related to the resolution of the Ram Janmabhoomi controversy. He has helped in the building of many Vedic schools or patashalas. He has also campaigned against attempts of Christian missionaries to convert Indians.

On November 11, 2004, he was accused by the government of Tamil Nadu state of instigating the murder a temple manager, and arrested. On January 10, 2005, the Supreme Court of India he obtained bail.
