~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ He earned his Bachelor's degree in Optics at the University of Rochester in 1951 and his Ph.D. from MIT. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ He worked at the Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory division of Beckman Instruments, and left the company along with the rest of the Traitorous Eight to form the influential Fairchild Semiconductor corporation. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ He later cofounded Amelco with Traitorous Eight alumni Jean Hoerni and Sheldon Roberts. Amelco became Teledyne, and Last served as a vice-president until his retirement. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ He founded the Archeological Conservancy, which has preserved and protected over 150 archeological sites in 28 states in the US. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ He is president of Hillcrest Press which publishes fine-art books on the history of American painting. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Traitorous Eight: The traitorous eight are eight men who left Shockley Semiconductor Laboratory to form Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957. This derogatory term was used by William Shockley, director of Shockley Labs, but others referred to them as the "Fairchild Eight" or the "Fairchildren."... Silicon Valley: Silicon Valley is a commonly used nickname for the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area in northern California, USA, originally referring to the concentration of silicon chip innovators and manufacturers, but eventually becoming a metaphor for the entire concentration of high tech businesses.... Bachelor's degree: A bachelor's degree is usually an undergraduate academic degree awarded for a course or major that generally lasts three or four years.
