Janitor


 
 

A janitor or caretaker (Chiefly Brit.) is a person who takes care of a building, such as a school, office building, or apartment block.

They are responsible primarily for cleaning, and often (though not always) some maintenance and security.

The title is derived from the Latin word ianitor meaning "doorkeeper". See also superintendent.

A female janitor is called a janitrix. A typical title given to janitors as a term of higher respect is custodian.
