Janet worked in a flower shop. She was very fond of plants, and pots of leafy green were seen all over her apartment. In the opening titles, Janet was shown watering a plant, accidentally getting some water on her roommate Chrissy Snow as she was sunbathing.

Janet and Chrissy shared an apartment in Santa Monica, California, and needed a third roommate to pay the rent after their old roommate moved out. They found Jack Tripper sleeping in their shower after a party they threw, and Janet told the landlord, Stanley Roper, that Jack was gay. He was allowed to live with them under this guise.

Jack sometimes had designs on Chrissy, and flirted with Janet less frequently. However, toward the end of the series, there was much speculation as to whether or not Jack and Janet would be wed. Eventually, she wed someone else (Phillip Dawson).
