James Roosevelt senior


 

James Roosevelt (July 16, 1828 - December 8, 1900) was a United States businessman and father of President of the United States Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

He was born in Hyde Park, New York to Isaac Roosevelt (April 21, 1790 - October 23, 1863) and his wife Mary Rebecca Aspinwall (December 20, 1809 - February 24, 1886.

Isaac was a fourth-generation descedant of Nicholas Roosevelt (1658 - 1742). Nicholas was also a sixth-generation ancestor of Theodore Roosevelt. Mary Rebecca was a sixth-generation descedant of Rebecca Stoughton, sister of William Stoughton who was judge and prosecutor during the Salem Witch Trials.

James was a tall, slender and wealthy man with considerable society connections. He was thus an eligible groom by any standard. In 1853, James was first married to his second cousin Rebecca Howland (1831 - August 21, 1876). They were parents to a single son: James Roosevelt, Jr (April 27, 1854 - May 7, 1927).

He became a widower by 1876 while his son was already an adult. He was invited four years later to a party organized in honor of the graduation of his cousin Theodore Roosevelt from Harvard University. He was there introduced to a distant relation by the name of Sara Delano and was soon taken with her.

James and Sara were married on October 7, 1880. They became parents to another son for James: Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

He was reportedly a good father to his second son Franklin. The boy addressed him as "Mr. James". However Mr. James suffered the first of a series of myocardial infarctions in 1891. The constant heart problems exausted him and progressively turned the man into an invalid. He would remain that way for the rest of his life.

His younger son Franklin reacted by becoming fiercely protective of his father. Franklin presented the appearance of a calm and contented individual while in the presence of his father. He was trying to shelter his father from the problems and anxieties of his enviroment.

He died ten years later. His estate was parted equally among his two sons.
