James Morrow

James Morrow (born 1947) is an award-winning fiction author. Calling himself a scientific humanist; his work not only satrises organised religion; but also elements of humanism and atheism; as he has said while religion is answerable to their faults, humanism and atheism has a lot more to answer to. There are also lots of philisophical points and debates on items such as the issue of suffering; where does humanity get their ethnics from and speculation of a post-thetic world.

The Godhead Trilogy

  • Towing Jehovah (1994) in which the corpse of God (a two-mile long white male with a grey beard, just as we've always pictured him) is discovered floating in the Atlantic Ocean. The captain of a supertanker is dispatched on a secret mission to tow the Divine Corpse to a tomb carved out of the arctic ice.
  • Blameless in Abaddon (1996) in which God is quite literally put on trial for crimes against humanity. "Abaddon" is a small fictional township in Pennsylvania, and an obscure Biblical word for Hell.
  • The Eternal Footman (1999) in which the absence of God, save for his skull which grins down on the Earth from geosynchronous orbit, results in a plague of death-awareness, which is countered by a monumental sculptor and a mysterious physician.
