James Moeser


 

James Moeser is the current chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also a trained concert organist.

Moeser began his academic career at the University of Kansas in 1966 as assistant professor of organ, University organist and organ department chairman. He rose to dean of the School of Fine Arts (1975-86) and distinguished professor of music (1984-86) at Kansas. He was dean of the College of Arts and Architecture and executive director of University Arts Services at Pennsylvania State University from 1986-92 and vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of South Carolina from 1992-96.

Born in 1939 in Colorado City, Texas, Moeser graduated from Monterey Senior High in Lubbock in 1957. He earned a bachelor?s degree in music with honors in 1961 from the University of Texas and proceeded to Berlin and Paris for a year of advanced study on a Fulbright Scholarship.

Moeser returned to Texas for a master?s degree in musicology in 1964 and completed a doctor of musical arts in 1967 at the University of Michigan. He won a fellowship for postdoctoral research in musicology at Michigan in 1968.

Moeser is married to Susan Dickerson Moeser, a fellow concert organist and UNL music faculty member. He has two children from a prior marriage: son Chris, a reporter with the Arizona Republic, and daughter Carter, a doctoral candidate in physical therapy at the Arizona School of Health Sciences.
