• He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
• He is an honourary member of the College of Fellows of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.
• In 1972 he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
• In 1972 he was awarded a Doctor of Literature, honoris causa, from Carleton University.
• In 1975 he was awarded an honourary Doctor of Humane Letters from Rhode Island College.
• In 1979 he was awarded an honourary Doctor of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design.
• In 1977 he won the Vicky Metcalf Award.
• In 1981 he was made an Honorary Fellow, Ontario College of Art.
• In 1987 he was awarded an Honourary Doctor of Law from Dalhousie University.
