James Arbuthnot

The Right Honourable James Norwich Arbuthnot (born August 4, 1952) is a British politician and member of the Conservative Party. He is the Member of Parliament for the constituency of Hampshire North-East.

He was first elected by North East Hampshire in the 1997 general election, and was re-elected in 2001 (see United Kingdom general election, 2001) and 2005. He had previously been the MP for Wanstead and Woodford in East London between 1987 and 1997, moving to North East Hampshire before the landslide 1997 election in order to find a safer seat.

Arbuthnot served as a Whip and in various ministerial posts under the government of Sir John Major. Under the opposition leadership of William Hague he served as opposition Chief Whip. He then became a backbencher and after a brief spell back on the front bench as Shadow Trade Minister he is now the Chairman of the Defence Select Committee.

Arbuthnot is the younger son of Sir John Sinclair Wemyss Arbuthnot, 1st Bt, MP. He is a barrister who is married and has four children.
