Jackass (TV series)


 

Jackass is a half-hour television series, originally shown on MTV, and first produced in 1999 in which a group of grown men do various humiliating, dangerous and/or ridiculous stunts of senseless stupidity, simply for fun.

The show developed from Big Brother Magazine, a skateboarding/humor magazine that Jeff Tremaine, Dave Carnie, Rick Kosick and Chris Pontius all worked at, and featured regular contributions from Johnny Knoxville and Dave England amongst others.

When Johnny Knoxville pitched the idea to test different self defense devices on himself, Jeff Tremaine suggested they film it. A hilarious and shocking piece of footage resulted, which originally appeared in the second Big Brother skateboarding video,Number Two. More footage followed as Knoxville's hijinx grew in popularity amongst the skateboarding underground.

Soon a television show pilot was put together by Tremaine, Carnie, Cliver and Knoxville, featuring Knoxville's stunts, and clips from CKY and CKY2K videos, and shopped to various networks by Tremaine's longtime friend and music video legend, Spike Jonze. MTV picked up the show, and Jackass was born.

The show ran for three seasons, the first episode aired on April 12, 2000, and the 25th and final episode aired on February 17, 2002. It was followed by the 2002 feature film, ', which was essentially an extended, uncensored episode of the TV show. The show was created by Johnny Knoxville, Spike Jonze, and Jeff Tremaine.

Though the cast members were often classified as a troupe, in reality most filming was done separately by different groups. Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn, and Brandon DiCamillo all filmed in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Johnny Knoxville, Chris Pontius, and others in California, and Dave England and Ehren McGhehey in Oregon.

In April 2001 Johnny Knoxville and other cast members participated in the Gumball 3000, a rally from Britain to Russia and back. Video footage of this constituted the entire seventh episode of the third series.

In the summer of 2003, Johnny Knoxville left the show. Remaining cast members are now featured in the spinoff shows Viva La Bam and Wildboyz.

A British version of the series was produced by MTV called Dirty Sanchez (or Team Sanchez in the U.S.). It is more controversial than Jackass with a high content of extreme stunts and strong swear words, as well as full frontal male nudity.

There is also a South African parody of Jackass and other 'extreme' shows of its genre, called Crazy Monkey.
