His style of humor was sarcastic and aggressive. His "insult humor" anticipated the style of Don Rickles. His strong and unapologetic on-stage personality belied a gentle and giving spirit that all of his friends knew well.

He wore a distinctive outfit: dark suit, white narrow-brimmed hat and horn-rimmed glasses. On one variety show, it was clear how popular Leonard was at the time, as a mimic / lookalike came onstage and did a Leonard-like schtick. Then Leonard himself walked onstage and adressed his doppelganger: "You've got a great future, son... but not in this business!"

Jack E. was significantly overweight, a fact he made reference to now and then. He died at a relatively young age, from complications following heart surgery.
